Timur Turlov has become president of the International Chess Federation
A new president was elected at the General Assembly of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Samarkand. Timur Turlov, a representative from Kazakhstan, assumed the position. This was reported by the FIDE press service.
A total of 110 delegates voted in support of Mr. Turlov’s candidacy. Germany’s Vadim Rosenshtein received 85 votes.
Timur Turlov is 38 years old and a native of Moscow. In 2023, he became head of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, and in 2024, he became president of the International School Chess Federation. He is the founder of Freedom Holding Corp.
Since 2018, FIDE had been led by Arkady Dvorkovich of Russia. He suspended his duties and withdrew from the presidential campaign after being placed on the European Union’s sanctions list. Vishwanathan Anand, a representative from India, was appointed acting president of the federation.
