Global Crude Steel Production Rises 1.7% in June 2026, Led by Africa and Viet Nam
The World Steel Association reported that global crude steel production among its 70 reporting countries reached 155.7 million tonnes in June 2026, marking a 1.7% increase compared to the same month in 2025. These 70 nations represented roughly 98% of total world crude steel output in the prior year.
Africa posted the strongest regional growth, with output rising 20.0% year-on-year to 2.2 million tonnes. The Europe Other category, which includes Turkiye and the United Kingdom, saw a 10.4% increase to 3.7 million tonnes. The European Union (27) produced 10.8 million tonnes, up 4.6%. North America recorded 9.5 million tonnes, a 5.0% gain. Asia and Oceania, the largest producing region, generated 115.2 million tonnes, up 1.5%.
Several regions experienced declines. The Middle East produced 4.0 million tonnes, down 13.4% from June 2025. Russia and other CIS countries plus Ukraine together produced 6.8 million tonnes, a decrease of 2.2%. South America's output fell 0.3% to 3.5 million tonnes.
China remained the world's largest steel producer with 83.7 million tonnes in June 2026, a modest 0.4% increase. India produced 14.1 million tonnes, up 4.5%. The United States output rose 3.5% to 7.2 million tonnes. Japan's production increased 1.3% to 6.8 million tonnes. Russia's estimated output fell 3.4% to 5.6 million tonnes. South Korea produced 5.3 million tonnes, down 0.9%. Turkiye recorded a 14.7% jump to 3.3 million tonnes. Germany's output grew 9.5% to 2.9 million tonnes. Brazil produced 2.8 million tonnes, up 0.1%. Viet Nam posted the largest percentage gain among the top ten, with output surging 27.5% to 2.6 million tonnes.
