Hogs Fall Back on Thursday, with USDA Reporting Tighter Hog Inventory

Lean hog futures were 30 cents to $1.17 lower across most contracts on Thursday USDA’s national base hog price was $78.95 in the Thursday afternoon report, down 70 cents from the day prior. The CME Lean Hog Index was down another 45 cents on September 22 at $82.47.

Export Sales data showed 35,323 MT of pork sales in the week of September 17 for 2026 shipment. Actual exports were tallied at 32,092 MT in that week, an 8-week high.

USDA’s Hogs & Pigs report showed September 1 inventory of all hogs down 1.51% from a year ago at 74.302 million head. Market hogs were down 1.55% to 68.427 million head, with breeding inventory numbers down 1.03%. The June to August pig crop was down 1.53% at 34.5 million head. Farrowings during that period dropped 2.66%, with intentions for September to November down 1.79%.

USDA’s pork carcass cutout value was back down 72 cents in the Thursday PM report, at $86.10. The belly, ham, and rib primals were reported lower. Federally inspected hog slaughter for Thursday was estimated at 489,000 head, with the weekly total at 1.922 million head. That was 5,000 head below last week and 11,867 head shy of the same week last year.
