🚫 Nine Blue Chip Companies Say No to Tokenized Stocks

Tokenized stocks have been one of the hottest topics in crypto this year. But now, the companies behind the shares are starting to object.

Nine issuers have objected to their shares trading on OKXICE, the tokenized stock venue from OKX and ICE, the company that owns the New York Stock Exchange. The companies include Verizon, Broadcom, UnitedHealth, Cerebras, AppLovin, Applied Digital, Rocket Lab, CoreWeave and Applied Optoelectronics. That’s 14% of the 63 companies the venue planned to list, and unfortunately, the notice doesn’t say why they objected or whether it keeps them off.

The OKX venue itself is ambitious, featuring around-the-clock trading through Uniswap v4 pools on OKX’s XLayer chain, settled in USDC and USDT, with a third-party tokenizer holding the real shares one-for-one at a registered broker-dealer. It exists because the SEC unveiled an “Innovation Exemption” in September, after the Clarity Act died in the Senate, letting platforms trade tokenized stocks without registering as exchanges.

But here’s the rub. OKXICE isn’t registered with the SEC and isn’t subject to Regulation NMS, the rule ensuring investors get the best displayed price. It isn’t required to give fair access. Trading is capped at a fraction of each stock’s normal volume. And administrators can upgrade the smart contracts with no advance notice.

Nasdaq isn’t on the list but is opting its own shares out anyway, citing the lack of real-time best prices and consolidated tape reporting. Nasdaq just won approval for its own tokenized securities pilot, so the company building one venue won’t put its stock on a rival’s.

Here’s the problem nobody priced in: issuer consent. Every bull case assumed the hard part was regulatory. Get permission, build the rails, the assets arrive. But a tokenized share needs a real share behind it, and now the company gets a say. A CFO weighing a thinner, more volatile market trading their stock at 3am with no best-execution duty can choose to opt out. And some already are.

So who is impacted? OKXICE most directly, losing 14% of its roster before it has even announced a launch date. Robinhood, Kraken and Backed Finance are hit too, all running stock-token products that need a growing pool of tokenizable equities. Robinhood Chain is definitely impacted, where Long.xyz pairs memecoins against tokenized NVDA and TSLA and meme-versus-stock pairs drive most stock-token volume. Uniswap was likely going to be one of the primary providers of the liquidity pools to trade these tokenized shares. And there are certainly more.

Let’s hope the objections from these nine don’t start a longer trend. If they do, then a larger battle may be looming for the future of tokenized stocks…
