Bitget agrees to acquire licensed Thai crypto exchange

The exchange will take over GMO Internet Group's licensed Thai unit through BTGT Management, pending regulatory approval.

Bitget has struck a deal to acquire GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics, a licensed Bangkok-based digital asset exchange and brokerage, in a move that would give the company a regulated entry point into Thailand, the company said Tuesday.

In a statement, Bitget CEO Gracy Chen called the acquisition an important step in the company’s regulatory progress across Southeast Asia. She said Thailand offers a dynamic market and that the deal gives Bitget a licensed local foundation to build its presence.

Under the proposed transaction, Japan’s GMO Internet, GMO-Z.com Holdings and other shareholders will sell their entire holdings in the business to BTGT Management, an entity in which Bitget holds an interest.

No financial details were disclosed. The acquisition requires regulatory approval, including clearance for the change of control. Bitget plans to introduce its trading platform to Thai users through a locally operated exchange after the transaction is completed and the necessary approvals are obtained.
